Mr. Claude Parent

A 44-year resident of Portsmouth, Virginia, Claude Parent is a native of Ferriday, Louisiana, where he was educated in its public schools. He was awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Louisiana Baptist College in Pineville. He earned the master's degree in education from The College of William and Mary in Virginia and the Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from Norfolk's Old Dominion University. He acquired his teaching experiences at the elementary and middle-school levels.

Parent has held a number of key administrative posts; chiefly among the positions of authority he has held are assistant principal, principal, and various directorships. This veteran school leader retired from the Portsmouth Public School Division after a 39-year stellar career.

During his career as a hands-on educator, he received distinguished service awards from school groups; community-based organizations have honored him with their distinguished service awards, which include the following: 1990 Teacher of the Year, 1991 Administrator of the Year, and 1997 Principal of the Year. This servant-leader has been affiliated with several professional associations and has served in a number of key leadership positions: past president of the Portsmouth Rotary Club and former member of the board of directors of the YMCA and the American Heart Association.

Claude Parent presently serves as Minister of Church Administration and Senior Adults at First Baptist Church of Norfolk. He served as a deacon at Western Branch Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Norfolk and was chairman of the board of Deacons at Norfolk's First Baptist Church. January 14, 2016, this concerned educator became the chair of the Portsmouth City School Board and serves on two advisory committees: Finance and the City Council Liaison.
